I like diesel. And I like Cummins. And I think there is a market for a fuel efficient 1500 diesel truck (actually, this is kind of proven with the way the EcoDiesel is selling).
To me, the variable here is the MPG which hasn't been announced. I don't know how an engine that is more powerful and more than 50% larger than the 3.0 can be competitive in MPG. And, if it isn't, I think it will have a tougher time selling.
Smaller turbo V6 gas engines have not proven to be a game changer in MPG and CAFE ratings. If you read this month's Motor Trend, they are predicting diesels will continue to proliferate despite the higher costs of fuel. Time will tell.
I will say that with the current delta between gas and diesel, this is a difficult time to launch a new diesel vehicle.
That said, I hope they are successful.
