I prefer a full size SUV over a full size truck almost every time. I prefer to lock my belongings inside the vehicle instead of outside.
I know that some nasty things require special handling while being hauled in the SUV. Typically this means putting gross stuff in totes (used oil.. etc.) or using my little trailer, which is my preference anyway because its so much easier to load, being low to the ground.
Not saying one is better than the other, but in my experience the SUV works great for hauling most homeowners needs. Thats why so many vehicle options are out there.
Half tons are very capable if equipped properly. You have to be careful with the trailer you choose but a 30 ft'er with a half ton is very doable. There are several lightweight trailers in the 5000 ish lb dry range that work great. These trailers will be 6500 ish lbs loaded up which is a sweet spot for half tons and TT's IMHO.
Check out the Apex 288BHS for a nice lightweight bunkhouse option.
Just pay attention to the tires PSI tongue weight, how you load the truck/SUV, and properly set up your WD hitch. Also, if you go half ton get the towing package (not just the receiver hitch)
3/4 ton is a great option too, but they are no longer made so if you are going new you have no choice but a half ton SUV. Used and your options open up to the Excursion and the Suburban 2500.
Thanks!
