I need advise on what SUV and what travel trailer !

Hello!

So I have been working festivals a lot, and now I'm ready to take the show on the road! We do lots of camping in a tent, then we started to sleep in the van, now we are ready to just spend our time in a decent travel trailer. In the summer we were going festival to festival. We've been though some heart aches and so we need to take some time to travel, see family, escape the winter to Florida!
I want to spend a year traveling. I am home schooling my son.
I have been looking at used travel trailers.
I really want one that has a queen bed in front then the bunk beds in the back. I need a decent kitchen table area to do paperwork on the computer, store a decent amount of food, be able to be self suficient if we camp at an event that does not have hook ups.

At first I was looking at Suv's that towed about 5000 lbs, but I guess that is not really going to pull what we are looking at?
I looked at some new ones at the dealership just to get an idea of size. The smallest we could go would be a 30 foot BH with a slide out. However I feel that a big old v8 Ford excursion would be so freakin big, especially if it's just me and my son most of the time. Any suggustions? adive? THANK YOU!

  • We pull a 33 ft with 2 slides with an excursion but it's a V10. If we had any less engine I don't think it would work very well. As said above, you can't pull a big TT with a small SUV.
  • Also, a 30ft bunkhouse for 2 people is pretty much on the larger end of the spectrum. A 30ft bunkhouse is usually what a family of 4-6 uses.

I'd keep an open mind to smaller units. I was in the same boat, thinking I needed a huge bunkhouse... I opened my options to some smaller units and found my perfect TT.

What kind of van do you have?

    My question, too.

If it's a one ton full size it'll haul circles around most SUV's. If it's a minivan- never mind!
  • You are going to have to choose. Either the big trailer you want OR a smaller SUV.

You can't have it both ways.

What kind of van do you have?
  • With just you and your son, why not consider a 3/4 ton crew cab PU instead of an SUV? Or is there a reason you feel the need for an SUV? For the amount of towing, and weight you are looking to tow, most SUVs aren't going to cut it.
  • For basically any 30ft bunkhouse, you're going to want a pickup truck, quite possibly a 2500 if you're towing often.

Passport has some lightweight 30ft bunkhouses, I still wouldn't want to tow them with a small SUV. I see a few guys on here with long TTs and towing with a new durango, not something I would do myself though.
