On my F350 I have a crossbed truck box at the front and I then went to a salvage yard and bought a fiberglass bed cover. I ended up cutting about 7 inches off the cover (shortbed cover on long bed truck) added hinges and secured to the truck box. truck box gives me ability to carry ready to access stuff (tools, fuel additives, oil etc) and I dont need to crawl up to the front to get stuff. Added a bed extender that I got at a yard sale to hold stuff near the tailgate. All works well. Plan is to do same thing to my ranger and add a ladder rack to carry the 12 ft boat so we can tow it behind the rv when kids want to go fishing and we need a vehicle to get to lake (daughter will take the kids in their PU). Only thing is will need to modify the rear gate mount on the rack so as to clear the hard cover allowing it to open/close.
