I have used the lamp idea many times. I have a couple of these THERMO-CUBES mdl TC-3 (AMAZON) that plugs into a 120VAC receptacle and kicks on at 35 DEGREES and turns off at 45 degrees... These will handle up to 20 AMPS I think it is. Have used them with electric heaters as well...
You are bringing back fond memories of when we lived in the Phoenix area back in the 70s. A bunch of us would make JEEPS RUNS up in the high country and get snowed in... This was BRRR TENT camping back then haha
