I did this when I was towing with my half-ton Burb. Problem is, if you take too much weight off the tongue, the trailer is less stable and more prone to sway. I ended up bending the plate on my hitch because I had my sway brake cranked down so hard. Wouldn't recommend it.

I would rather see OP over weight and stable than under weight and swaying all over the place.
