We've only ever stayed at national or state campgrounds. The last national one we stayed at was Assateague Island off the Maryland coast and they had threaded fittings. For the ones that don't, I bought a water thief, secure it to the faucet with hose clamps and station someone there in case it comes off and to hold those spring loaded valves open.
As of two years ago, most NFS campgrounds prohibit hooking a hose directly to their water faucets, at least the ones that have outsourced management to companies like Scenic Canyons. They claim it risks contaminating their water supply.
However, we just camped for almost two weeks in a NFS campground in southern Colorado. I have a 30 gallon tank on our travel trailer. There were four of us, we all showered and washed dishes every day. I would top off the tank with about 14 gallons of water every two days. Did it from Aquatainers sitting in the back of my Jeep and a water hose to the trailer. Wasn't difficult at all.
