I take the KISS approach and just set my water heater temperature to what is comfortable for a "hot water only" shower. No wasted water trying to get the right mix and less water in the gray tank.
Not all water heaters have that type of temperature control. Mine’s just on or off with a high limit switch to keep it from getting too hot. We could do the hot water only shower if we turned the WH on and waited about 10 minutes to start the shower. But, if we got distracted by something (squirrel!!!!) and let it run longer than that, we were back to fiddling with the knobs again.
I also considered putting a thermostatic valve on the WH, but that’s a pretty cramped area behind it already, and you can’t adjust those while you’re showering like the one I installed. The boss also likes a much hotter shower than I do.
