insurance questions

When I did the research, my homeowners covered it at home off the truck and the truck policy covered on the truck; neither one offered replacement value (which was the deal breaker for me.)

But if I had opted for those individual cross-over two policies, it would not cover the camper off the tuck in the field since it was not tied to either if it was standing alone out somewhere... that was the final nail that made me get an independent policy on the TC.

To the OP, insure the truck, insure the camper if you wish, go camping.
(PS, it’s not cargo if it’s off the truck and in some states it requires its own license plate. )

When I was shopping for insurance one of the agents told me this. I asked him if I was carrying a $20,000 grand piano would the insurance cover it? After thinking about it a bit he said no, not really. Turns out there are some low limits for cargo in the fine print.

Check carefully but I think you are best off with a separate rider.

Bare in mind that statistically insurance is like casino gambling.
You will loose money on it.
Sure when you have $75,000 new TC, you want it insured from flood damage, hail damage, rat damage, snake damage and lot more.
But my camper is worth in $10,000 range. Do I want to pay $500 annual premium for it, when I live in place with no tornadoes and no floods?

I got that idea from my State Farm agent. We all don't live in New York.

My Lance 1121 that we owned for 12 years was totaled by Hurricane Michael. It was insured with a separate policy through Progressive. Turned out it was an agreed upon payout policy and I received the amount that I had paid for the camper NEW in 2006. I was very pleased. The premiums were reasonable.

We now have an "new" camper, a 2010 Lance 1181 and it is also insured with the same type policy.

One issue I discovered with getting insurance on the 1181, liability insurance on the camper. While it is on the truck, the truck insurance may cover. If at home, my homeowner's policy may cover. But what about if it is off the camper away from home? What if someone falls getting in or out? Or some kid is running through the area and splits his head on the slide out?

Many companies will not provide liability coverage on campers (other than motorhomes). Progressive has Vacation Liability coverage. We have this. Hope we never use it.

^^^^^Good point! Researched this quite a bit. Every agent I talked to said they were "reasonably confident" an umbrella policy would provide personal liability coverage when the camper is not physically sitting on the truck, or at home. As for specific, in writing, air-tight personal liability coverage when the camper is off the truck, say, at a storage facility (or campground), well, none of the agents could provide that---unless you claimed you were living in it full-time.
