Interesting trip........

So we had a 3 days camping planned for this weekend. Loaded up last night with my 2 kids and a one of the kids friends, new kitten, and me and my wife. We head out and literally 5 minutes into the trip when my wife gets a text from her mom "something is wrong with dad." So not knowing the severity of this we drove on we got to the campsite and found out dad was going in for emergency surgery to clear a blockage that had caused a stroke. All I needed to do was slide the slide out and we would have been set up so I quickly tore everything back down again and we were off for a 1 1/2 hour drive to the hospital were dad had a successful surgery and and my wife saw him right after he came out. At one time I had 10 family members in the parking lot hanging out at the camper eating and talking about the days events. Even had security come by and gave us their OK on our parking lot camping! LOL I told my daughters friend who was going on her first camping trip with us that I hope she enjoyed her first camping trip and that we usually stayed longer!!

Good to hear that your FIL was okay and that the RV was able to be a focal point for the family. That would have been hard here in So.Texas though since the temps these days are pushing 100 and that is before the humidity is considered. Unless that parking lot had 30A service the trailer would have been a roaster.

That brings up an interesting question - did everyone sleep in the TT in the parking lot, and how did you keep it from being an oven inside without power.

Doug we did not sleep in the camper. But we did have several people eat a sandwich and just get a little rest at the camper between visiting dad in the ICU we left about 10:30 that night. But all that being said for STL in July it was a nice enough nite we could have slept there.

  • Glad it turned out ok and that FIL is doing well. MIL is in an assisted living/memory care unit and before the change to the memory care, sometimes we didn't even get out of town before DHs cell phone rang. Guess the move into memory care is both the good news and the bad news....the care is so exceptional that they don't call unless something truly important is going on, then we decide from there how to proceed.

That wouldn't have worked well in the center-city Philadelphia hospital we had to go to, unless I could get the TT into the parking garage! LOL

That was a concern of mine since I have never been to this hospital and we were prepared to have one of my wife's family members come get her if necessary but the hospital had a nice big mostly empty parking lot. Actually the security guard told us if we were going to sleep there last night that we would have to move further up the lot because it would be much busier on Saturday afternoon.

  • Glad to hear your fil had a successful surgery and hoping for no residual affects. I'm sure he'll enjoy your tales of a unique camping experience!
  • Main thing is her father is okay. Lots more camping trips too come.
  • I can relate to your dilemma. Had a similar thing happen with a hurricane. Glad to hear you were able to salvage at least some of the trip. A true RV'er seems to have a unique ability to just go with the flow.
