You nailed it on the head. The advantage is to not have to sweep the slide before you retract it. I still get enough water on the roof of my slide during a driving rain that if I pull the slide in the next day I will still have water on it that will come into the RV and need to be dried off before I drive away. They do flap a lot in the wind, and 2 of mine that are 12 feet long collect water on them (the 6ft one doesn't). RV's have long been without them, but even with the above quirks, I hate getting up on the roof, so I'm glad I have them.
