Is it dumb to pay cash for a used rig, private seller?

You all know me; I worry about things, especially at the last minute. I think I have found my van. Mechanic approves it. He's not my mechanic, as I am not home, but he had good reviews on google....

Do it at the local police department and take the title inside and ask them to run it. Our local PD actually ran an article in the local paper suggesting this method.
