Too many times I go to look at things like motorcycles etc and the title isn't clean. The last guy I dealt with even told me on the phone that there was no lien because they paid cash for it. After looking the turd over the final blow to that deal was that there was a bank lien on the title. I said, you told me it was clean. He said oh here is a pay off letter. Kiss my, um bye bye goofball.
I have had them whip out salvage titles, titles in someones else name and they even say oh by the way I cant find the title just as we are closing the deal. In Michigan there is a box area on the title for first lien holder and it should be empty. DO NOT accept pay off letters. I now ask to see the title before we even talk about the vehicle. In Mich I would do the transaction at the Secretary of State.
