Is it dumb to pay cash for a used rig, private seller?

You all know me; I worry about things, especially at the last minute. I think I have found my van. Mechanic approves it. He's not my mechanic, as I am not home, but he had good reviews on google....

LOL!

I don't know what was going on with those two sellers. They were clearly unfamiliar with the rig. Did not know how to work the electronics, didn't know it had a battery box underneath or what that was for. If I am charitable, maybe they bought it at an auction. But I can't help wonder if they had stolen it.
