We had a 2003 Duramax/Allison 3/4 ton 3.73 rear end pulling a Jayco Eagle 215SD with different boats behind and got between 11 and 12 mpg very consistently here in the Rocky Mountains. Switched to a 2011 Ram 2500 long-bed diesel with 3.42 gearing and a six-speed manual and pulled our new Jayco 26.5 HT RLS to Zion last spring and got 10.2 down and back overall, including quite a bit of driving without the FW. For various reasons, switched back to 2012 GMC D/A with 3.73 rear end and pulled our FW and boat three times to camp and fish and got between 11 and 12 mpg each time. I have never towed with a Ford diesel, but it seems that your mileage might be a tad lower than normal. Maybe you have some problems with your injectors that could be addressed. I know when the injectors on my 2003 GMC went bad, mileage went to heck also.
