Is there a correct way?

Do you put your slide out and then level(adding blocks under the tires if needed)or Level first and run your slide out. I've had TT's for most of my life. I have been doing my setting up by leveling then running my slide out. A coworker just bought his first TT and I have been the go to guy for all his questions. His dealer told him the set up process is to run the slide and then level. The coworker even turned me to other dealer's youtube pages teaching set up procedures with the Slide then Level. How do you do your set up?

Is there a correct way?

  • Tell your friend to check his owner's manual, it should tell you the procedure recommended by the mfr.

On our old 34' Sunnybrook, it said:

    1. Level side to side
    2. Unhitch and level front to back
    3. Extend slide
    4. Deploy stabilizer jacks.

Our new Terry says almost the same with one key difference:

    1. Level side to side
    2. Unhitch and level front to back
    3. Deploy stabilizer jacks
    4. Extend slide.

I've done it both ways and doesn't appear to make any difference.
  • I can't reach the stabilizer under the slide unless I lie on the ground which I'm not about to do.
  • Level side to side, unhitch, level front to back, put stabilizer jacks down, plug in, hook up water, hook up sewer (if applicable), put out slides, roll out awning, set up lawn chairs, put ice in tall glass, fill with appropriate liquor, sit down and relax.
  • Level, then slide. I also leave the slide side a little high if possible.
  • We level with boards approx 3/4 inch high on our double slide side, open the slides and then we are level. I wouldn't move the trailer with the slides open.
  • My owners manual says to level first, and then deploy the slides.

If the information is not in his owners manual, I would check with the manufacturer to be sure.
  • I think the salesman is full of green paint. Putting the slide out after leveling is not going to cause the TT to tilt twoards one side. Besides, his method means you are moving your TT with the slide(s) extended which if you think about, goes against common sense. Slides shou;d be in when moving the TT. I'd like to see a link to these videos.
