As far purchasing out of state, in the op's case, Yes, I believe it would be advantageous. I did it and saved all the way around, and we got to travel through Ca, Ore. and little piece of Wa. Absolutely gorgeous.
Yeah, having warranty work done might be tricky, but just make sure you buy a brand that at least has a decent reputation for little warranty returns. It would also help to be able to turn your own wrenches. Most issues can be repaired without going to the dealer if you're inclined to do so. for me the inconvenience of having to take it to the dealer, drop it off, possibly have some yahoo work on it, not fix it right all the while costing me time and more money, does not appeal to me. Short of delamination or the frame snapping or an anchor point ripping out **cough, cough**, I prefer to fix it myself.
