Is this the FIRST time you've followed behind you truck in another vehicle? If so it could very well have been just the angle you were looking at the truck as it drove, you're not in the center of the road but off to the left side when driving another vehicle. What I'd do is wait for a fresh coat of snow (which shouldn't be too long) and drive down a road or back lane and actually see how the axles track for sure.
