Any competent transmission shop should be able to tell you pretty much all they'd need to know by removing the transmission pan and looking in it (and the filter) for debris. I wouldn't go with a used transmission unless you can prove it has been rebuilt in the recent past. All the money it will take in labor charges to remove and replace a transmission isn't worth it unless you install a rebuilt (new) one. With a used one, you might be paying that labor charge all over again in a few months.
