Jalousie windows vs. sliding windows - Pros & Cons

I am in the process of purchasing my first TC a Lance 825. I have seen the models in person at shows outside of my area and am going to be making my purchase from a distance. I have narrowed it down to two dealers, both with 2016 model years. My dilemma is that one dealer has one with jalousie windows and the other has the sliding windows. While I like the look of the jalousie windows, that dealer is asking a little more for his and won't budge on the price. Looking to get opinions on both from real-life experiences with both. I live in south Florida so the jalousie would seem to be better with rain but at the same time I would also probably be running the AC most of the summer. Any thoughts on either? Are the jalousies worth the extra money (about $500 more)?

Thanks

  • We would only have jaulousie windows since we dry camp and don't use the air conditioner (live in the Yellowstone area so really don't need one) and we can leave them open when it rains. We leave our dog in the camper when we hike and fish so we are able to leave the windows open and the Fantastic fan going to keep the camper from getting too warm. Also, an open slider allows a bigger area for someone to break into the camper.
  • Our previous camper had a jalousie window in the dinette and we liked being able to leave it open in the rain. Our present camper has sliding windows. We were disappointed about not having a jalousie. But so far we have not had enough rain to cause a problem.
  • I've had both. The crank-out windows are great in the rain but don't afford the nice cross-breeze ventilation of sliding windows.
  • I have the jalousie which I do like for the above said reasons but they are not thermal/dual pane. Some sliders are which would greatly help with heating and cooling of the unit, so I would go with the sliders if the ones your looking at are dual pane type. You can get storm windows for jalousie but they are a pain for storing, putting on/off, removing window cranks when using, etc......I know because I have them and rarely use them because of the inconvience .

  • Good point about being able to leave them open when you leave the unit for while if there is a chance of rain. 67avion has a point though about the lack of issues with the sliders compared to the jalousies. I am leaning towards the unit with the sliders and spending a little money on a good MaxAir cover for the fantastic fan. Thanks everyone for the feedback!

We took possession of our new trailer last June and were parked at a field getting the 'kinks' out. It was very hot where we were so we left all the slider windows open, as well as the vents and went out to get some supplies. While we were gone a terrific rain storm came in and soaked the bed and anything else close to the windows through both the vents and slider windows. Now we have to make sure we close all the windows when we leave, which is a real pain and makes it hot at times. We do have the vent covers on now - at the time we just had not installed them yet. So, our recommendation would be to have at least two jalousies on opposite sides of the trailer so you can vent and don't need to close everything up.
  • Trader, my vintage 1967 Avion has jalousie windows. I think they are marginally better in case of rain, but have many times the issues of sliding windows. I would not spend the money if it were up to me.
  • I own a 2010 Lance 825 the only Jalousie windows in the camper are by the dinette and by the right side of the bed. I like the windows because you can leave them open a little when it is raining.
  • Jimh425 - Thanks for the reply! Your comment is well taken that there is always another way to ventilate the unit.

I have been shopping from Arizona to Maine because I am not afraid to travel for the right deal. I have pretty much narrowed it down to these two dealers and these two units.

    Thanks again, Bob
  • I don't have a Lance, but I have sliding windows. I'm not sure how I would have tinted them (well, dw did the work) if I had the jalousie style. Also, the mechanism seems to be more complicated with the jalousie style.

With respect to rain, if it also has wind, I don't think you'll leave the windows open. We have ours open for the Northwest sprinkles sometimes but never with the windy rain. If there is a slight wind, we just open the down wind side and use the fan.

As far as buying one goes, you should check with some remote dealers if necessary to see the price range is reasonable or not.
