Jay Flight Swift 264BH v. Aspen Trail 2710BH

We are shopping for a TT and are limited by the tow capacity of our Tahoe (2007 5.3 Vortec w/3.42 axle 2WD = 6,200 lbs). We have 2 daughters (teens) and they're likely to want a friend or two to tag along, hence the bunk designs.

I'm trying to stay as close to or below 4,500 lbs with the TT.

I think we are narrowed down to 3 (the two in the title plus the Jay Flight 26BH).

Of the Swift and Aspen Trail, can anyone provide some insight regarding quality? I've found these three all under $15,000 so price isn't an issue in this comparison.

Thanks.

  • Actually, I'm glad you mentioned the 238ML. Initially I thought I wouldn't consider that one because there is no sofa, but it's actually a pretty nice layout. How do you like it?
  • Thanks for the feedback! You've provided some food for thought so I'll be sure to add that to my thought process.
  • Sorry I can't comment on those trailers as I haven't seen them.
I tow a Passport 238ML (4500 lbs loaded) with a '03 Tahoe with 5.3, 3.73 gears and 4x4, 4500 is just fine (my tow capacity is 8200). Invest in a good brake controller and weight distributing hitch and make sure your tires are good. I don't remember if you have the 6 or 4 speed trans, the 6 speed is nicer to tow with. You will need to be careful about how you load the Tahoe to avoid pushing the rear axle over its GAWR, and upgrade the trans cooler if you tow on a lot of hills or stop and go traffic, but if you put everything in the trailer and only carry passengers in the Tahoe it should be fine.

In general, the inexpensive lightweight travel trailers are somewhat light duty in things like the cabinets and bunks. You will want to make sure the bunks have a high enough weight limit to actually be used by an adult sized person. The bunks in my TT have a 300 lb weight limit. I've had to fix several loose screws in the cabinets and brace up the dinette backs with angle iron, but the rest of my trailer has held up well to a couple of seasons of moderate use- 7500 miles total so far. You will probably want to upgrade the mattresses.

I would shop these by which dealer offers the best customer service and which trailer feels best to you. Also, check things like are there power outlets near where your kids are likely to need them, is the lighting adequate, how will it feel to be cooped up in on a rainy day. Spend a few hours in them on the dealer's lot if you can.
