Jayco Jay Hunter 950 Repair help

Hello i am looking to fix the camper. Above cab and lamination. If anyone has any tips would be greatly appreciated. Would also like to eliminate the front window
  • I forgot, that 8 weeks was with some very expensive help.

This is the wife cleaning the back of the fiberglass for the second time, after I had assembled it in a manor that didn't work well.

She kept complaining about her wages.
  • I believe it was one of the rv.net moderators that created the link below to help with posting pictures. It works great.

At your home screen, right click, select new, then shortcut. Copy the link below as the location, select next and give it a name like RVnetPhoto, then select finish. This short cut will take you to the picture hosting site quickly any time you need to post a picture.

I keep it on my home screen next to my rv.net short cut.

To post a picture, double click your newly created shortcut "RVnetPhoto". Drag the photo you want to post to the host window and drop. It will return a link. Just copy the link and past it into the rv.net message window.

You won't see the photo until after you post the message.

You'll get the hang of it after a few posts.

This is what I found under the roof and skin when I opened ours up. It was still wet and looked bad but wasn't nearly that bad once it was dry and I had removed the damaged material. I bought the camper in this condition. I would do it again if I found just the right camper for us.

I really enjoyed learning how they are built and putting it back together. It took me about 8 weekends with the learning process and redoing several items that didn't work for me.

This is the roof over the bath. Skylight was leaking.

This was the front cab over. Both sides had been leaking at the top corners of the rubber roof trim.

Let us know when you get started.
  • Thank you Joe417, i won't start until spring. I havn't used it in two years after purchasing a 5'er but really do like this unit. Trying to post pics and once i find out how i will get them up...cheers!
  • I have repaired some of these type of issues. Most are different depending on the camper, aluminium frame, wood frame, fiberglass bonded to paper board or wood, etc.

You'll need to get it covered up and opened up so it will dry. And so you can start to see what will be needed to get the job done.

I rebuilt a '93 Palomino a couple of years ago. It had a partial aluminium frame with wood framing on the roof and cab over nose. The cab over nose was fiberglass bonded to cardboard. The side walls were fiberglass bonded to plywood then bonded to aluminium framing and 2 inch polystyrene bead insulation. I cleaned and reused the fiberglass but you can purchase replacement material. It makes the job easier but more costly. To remove the widow, you may want to replace the fiberglass but you could frame it in, cover the opening, and trim the cover material with aluminium trim.

To get started I would remove the edge molding without bending it too much and carefully pull the front fiberglass off to assess the damage. You'll have to hunt for some of the fasteners as they may be hidden. The palomino I repaired took over a week just to dry completely (polystyrene bead insulation holds water well) then about 8 weekends putting it back together. Due to the cold weather up there yours may dry a bit faster.

It, being a 93 model, will most likely be wood framed. I've found the framing to be the easy part in the repair. Re-laminating the plywood on the roof and under the fiberglass and cleaning the sealer off everything took the most effort but isn't that hard. Once you do this you'll know how it's put gather. It's fairly hard work but I enjoyed doing it.

Once you get a handle on the conditions under the skin, you'll be able to ask more specific question. You'll get a multitude of opinionated answers from which you will have to choose which you like the best.

I read RV.net most nights. Your welcome to PM me also. If you post pictures, everyone can see exactly what you asking about.

    Good luck,
  • d3500ram it is a1992 jayco jayhunter 950 I believe the coating to be a kind of rubber/ fiberglass? Front window leaked and thought I had it fixed. Right side cab over and front needs repaired...not sure how to approach the covering repair
  • Be forewarned that once you start to take things apart, most likely you will find more to repair than anticipated. Keep a good attitude and see it through... do not get discouraged.

As far as the front window goes, it is not difficult to eliminate it. But it is difficult to comment not knowing what you have (brand, model, year. etc) and what type of finish it is (fibreglass, metal, etc) Tell us more and a lot of knowledgeable folks can comments. Photos are very helpful when seeking answers.
