What the salesman told me that sold me my trailer is that he has a similar sized trailer and pulls it comfortably with a F-150. He said as long as it’s a newer truck it would work just fine. I was thinking 3/4 ton not 1/2 ton from the start. I currently have a newer Dodge Durango that I really like. I was thinking of trading it in for a Dodge 2500 with a Diesel engine but have heard Ford is better for towing.
"pulls it comfortably" - now that's a loaded statement. Depends on what your level of comfort is. Gas engines make their power in the higher rpm bands. So lots of revving going up every hill and overpass. Drives me nuts after a while. I pulled the fifth wheel in my signature with a 2017 Ram with the 6.4 hemi. Was it capable? Yes. Was it comfortable? Not really. Was spent at the end of a 4 hour drive.
If for any reason, you may consider a bigger camper in the future, then get the 3500 SRW. If anything get a diesel - don't be scared of them like i was. I'm not going to go in on weights/payload as others have mentioned this. Just know that a diesel in a 2500 series truck has a lot less payload because the engine is heavier. If cost is a concern, then look at used. CarMax, Cargurus, etc.
Gas mileage? Way better when towing - and that's where you want to be. I don't calculate it - I just know that I have to stop less.
Took a recent trip to TopSail preserve across FL on I10. It just rolls on and on. Sat back and enjoyed the trip. No more stress or white knuckles for me. Good luck
