Just got a camper.. Need more truck. HELP

ok, so we got a 24ft toy hauler.. Towed it home with a 2015 F150 Eco boost. Truck pulled it fine.. I think its just to lite. Could feel the trailer surging the truck and Im not a fan. So with that said. I was originally looking at a used F250. Now the girlfriend is fixated on the excursions. Something we can get her kids and mine in and it be comfy. So can anyone tell me what to stay away from in an excursion? Im thinking that that tow rig will be a much better "feel" going down the road opposed to feeling like the back end of the truck is on skates. I would prefer to go with the diesel too.
  • 54xx lbs dry weight on trailer, we do have a load leveling hitch. Dont have the details in front of me right this second though.

Me, Gf, 4 kids and 3 dogs

Thats all the info I have right this minute. And when I say surge. Im not talking while braking.. I mean just going down the road.
  • I agree with other posters - Clean Excursions can be hard to find and something might be wrong with your hitch set-up.

So with that, give us some more information:
    - Weight of your trailer, both dry and total weight loaded (per sticker is fine)
    - Tongue weight of TT
    - Type of hitch you are using, be specific
    - Payload of your truck (per sticker on door jamb)
    - Size of family (helps understand your truck needs)

Now, if you're just itchin' for a new truck, then get what you want and ignore the my questions.
  • I would agree with the other posters! If the 24 ft trailer was causing issues for you, it may have been brakes issues, WDH issues, or both!

Having written that, get what you feel comfortable with and what's best for the family!

    Good luck !
  • If you like the modern 2015 F150 Ecoboost, you might not like driving an Excursion. Excursions are great, but they have not been made since 2005. Since a 24 ft trailer is not huge, you might get by with a newer Expedition or Suburban if you need room for people.
  • Let's put first things first...what you have now...

If you feel the trailer surging you do not have the brake controller set aggressively enough...the trailer should not push you at all since it has its own brakes.

Second...ensure your weight distribution hitch is set properly. (You are using a weight distribution hitch right?)

As for Excursions...stay away from the 5.4 V8 and the 6.0 PSD...look for a V10 or a 7.3 PSD... Just know that both are going to feel like slugs compared to your Ecoboost.

Another option is a Suburban 2500...you can find them with the 8.1 liter big block or the 6.0 Gas V8...later model Suburbans 2500 have a five speed transmission that does very well.

Congrats on the trailer and good luck on the tow vehicle!

    Thanks!

  • Can be hard finding clean Excursions nowadays and when you do they're expensive. I'd look for a single rear wheel 3500-series Crew Cab from any of the big three. If going 6.0 td, I'd be wary of the 04 and 05s.
  • Sounds like your hitch may not be set up properly but there is nothing wrong in wanting more truck. If your looking for Excursions, the good ones can be tough to find. Easy question though....stay away for the 6.0 and try to find a 7.3 if your only looking at a diesel. Enjoy the camper.
