Our 6 and 8 yr old boys can't really do much more than get excited, they can't be trusted to remember anything. But, my 8 year old will pack up his 3DS and sit in the car for an hour happily. Once we get there, the 3DS gets locked in the glove box.
When I went on my cross-country road trip, I gave all the kids (17, 12, & 5) jobs to do when arriving and leaving each campsite.. One would do the electrical, the other would do the water, and I would have my 5-year old get a bunch of stuff out of the hold, like scissor jack handle, landing pads, levelling blocks, and put them all near where they had to go. She would chock the wheels (I would double-check, of course) .. Gives them a feel of the work involved, and they can appreciate it a bit more.
Of course, when we're on a regular trip, and not packing/unpacking every other day, they get out of practice. I was surprised when a year later, we went camping, and my little one started doing her normal job perfectly.
