The bump was easier to feel when I was towing with my Expedition & its looser rear end (independent suspension with non-truck tires). With the F350, I can't feel it at all even if I really dial down the brake controller.
For me, the bump felt like someone gave the rear bumper a hard sideways shove. I never felt unsafe or like I was losing control.
For your installation question, you shouldn't have any trouble. The instructions are very detailed with photos.
