54, congrats on your newfound direction. Many of us have been a precursor to your move. I see an interesting pattern here.
It seems like many jeeper types start off
1. just tent camping at the trailhead or near the trail's edge near their jeeps. Check.
2. Then when age rears its inevitable head, there is a push to camp IN some kind of weather protective box and OFF the ground. Check.
3. An under sized truck with a big 'ol camper on the back seems like a good solution because you can flat tow the jeep: i.e.: have it all. Check. (This could also be transposed to boat owners.)
4. This works well when you are in an active off-road, jeeping, or boating life style just trying to get to the trailhead or launch facility on a Friday night. Check.
5. Then the inevitable itch to actually travel in the weather protective box looms larger than the itch to jeep. Check.
6. You start traveling and find you are moving with too many accouterments and realize it's time to jettison some stuff. Check.
7. You start thinking about using the truck camper as the minimal off-road conveyance. The problem is the size and weight of the camper. Check.
8. You get into a downsizing mode going, it seems, backward in reducing the size and weight of your contraption to fit your current perceived needs and circumstances. Check. Many of us have been there.
