Just to stir the pot..

So, added these Hellwig helper springs on my 13 F150 because I did not like how much sag the truck has when I load stuff in the bed, or even hitch the trailer up..

I had these on my old 97 F150 and loved them..

I know they don't increase any "weight rating" on the truck.. That's not the point.. Just want to reduce the sag when loading the bed with some groceries.. ;)

I'm using that rv.net photo posting link, so not sure how this works yet..

Anyway, I like them so far.. More info once I tow with them and the new brakes and shocks too! :)

  • Interesting.Nice looking rotors too.

The brakes are Power Stop K6268-36 Front & Rear Z36 Truck and Tow Brake Kit

Installed them back in Sept and as you can see, no rust on the rotors and they haul the truck down a whole lot better than the OEM's..

  • Add a leaf's will lift your truck more than these do. Plus, these are more of a "progressive" load rate instead of just a solid leaf that is static.

Depending on how much pre load you apply to them, the more the stock suspension flexes, the more the overload springs come into play.

I can adjust the pre load tension by just adjusting the outer U bolt tension.

As the stock suspension loads, the more tension is pulled on those U bolts, which pulls harder on the overloads.

Don't know on the hitch adjustment.. I used to drop about 3" when dropping the trailer tongue weight on the truck.

Then, after setting the WD bars, it would level out, but with the new Bilstein 5100 shocks, I did opt for a little bit of a "level" to the front end of about 1.5", so just looking to not sag any more then when it was stock.

Dunno if I just ruined it or made it better... :)

Time will tell and I'll update everyone after the first tow with the new setup for sure.. :)

  • Interesting.Nice looking rotors too. Was there any thought given to just adding a leaf to the stack? I ask because it looks like the helper springs are always engaged, even when the truck is empty, which might make for a stiffer ride, possibly similar to the option of just adding a leaf. Just curious ...
  • Will you need to readjust your hitch to account for the new springs? i would think you would. Could be wrong
  • I will say it's a little 'firmer' of a ride.. It did lift the rear end by about 1/2" from stock. But, for me, that's what I was looking for.. :)

I did put a bit of tension on them when unloaded, thus the 1/2" lift.. But, driving over the local speed bumps we have in our neighborhood, it was not any more 'stiff' than before, but it is 'firmer' overall.. I know that probably does not make much sense, but until I get some real miles under my belt with them, I can't say right now how much it helps or or deters from the original ride.

But, I did have them on my old 97 F150 forever and I really liked them on that rig..

  • Nice. It looks like a fairly easy installation.
Do they make the ride any stiffer or bouncy when the bed is empty?
