Disagree. Pupped for 25 years. Popups are a big hassle over a TT.
"Hassle" has nothing to do with the financial decision to move from a cost effective popup to a wallet bending travel trailer, 5th, MH, whatever. What you may view as a hassle wouldn't necessarily be by someone else but regardless, insofar as this discussion is concerned your point is irrelevant. :R
Cost differences between a popup and a different type of RV are not relevant in this discussion.
The OP will have to store his RV, whatever he gets, as he lives in an apartment complex. A popup would not be practical in this situation due to summer storms and having to dry out the canvas. With a hard sided TT, he can put it back in storage immediately without worry.
When I decided I was interested in an RV, I bought a cheap TT - $1800 1985 Shasta. It was old, but was enough to figure out if I would use it without breaking the bank. I had it for 3 years and took it out for three weekends each summer. By then, I knew that I enjoyed camping and figured out what I liked and didn't like about the TT.
At that time, I bought my clipper. I have put more money into it, but it's something I really enjoy so it's worth it to me.
As I get closer to retirement, I am thinking forward for long distance travel versus camping. While the clipper is wonderful, it's not really practical for sightseeing and big cities. So, I realize that having a small trailer that I can tow with my Durango makes more sense. But, the clipper is still perfect for camping and requires less fuss (no hitching, etc.). So, I got my FoldnRoll for travel and am keeping the clipper for camping. Of course I can store them at home.
OP - you might want to get something cheap to start with. It will give you something to get familiar with the systems and will help you decide what things are important to you. While you use that TT, you can be spending the next couple years researching to find exactly what you want while still being out camping.
