"automotive commentator".....one has to wonder what credentials are required to call oneself by that title ?
I reckon I would wonder if this individual has ever owned or driven any of the 60 degree V6 engines in the VQ series of Nissan ? I have the 4.0L version in my Frontier, and I've driven the smaller ones in sedans ( middle daughter had a Infinti G37 ). Excellent engine in both NA and turbo versions. Smooth, plenty of power, can be tuned/designed for good fuel mileage or good power, etc.
Torque spread is also largely determined by choosing cam design that allows good cylinder filling at lower RPM's. With the modern versions of variable valve timing, they can get good low end and then transition to efficient high end power also.
Between all the cars, motorcycles and boats I've had, I've run singles, parallel twins, V-twins, triples, inline fours, 90 degree V4's, inline and V sixes, and plenty of V8's. They all worked. Some were built and tuned for low end torque, some for top end HP. All have been reliable and usable.
Often a manufacturer will choose a given layout also predicated on the ability to build multiple different engine displacements or even number of cylinders on the same production line. There can be a huge savings of production tooling costs by doing so.
....automotive commentator.....I'm still chuckling over that one....:)
