It isn't a bad idea to have any propane vessel inspected. You can do some inspection for rust on the exterior. No matter what type it is it should be able to be pressure tested for safety. Typically propane bottles/tanks/cylinder should have their outlet discharge on the top when rested securely for obvious reasons. Posting a picture of what you have would help.
