Lance Propane Tank Recertification

I guess this 1996 Lance camper has lasted way too long because I now need to get my REPLACEMENT propane tanks recertified before I can get them refilled. The original tanks had the old valves and I had to get new tanks many years ago. Now those tanks are "old" tanks that nobody will fill.

Anyone had their 20# horizontal Lance tanks recertified? What is the process for that? I'm concerned that if they have to disassemble the tank, they are a lot more likely to screw something up than fix something that has been working perfectly for 10 or 12 years. I just love big daddy government watching over us and keeping us all safe from disaster and such; pretty soon tooth brushes will come with an arrow and direction to insert this end into mouth.

Thanks for any help,
Brad

I didn't know Lance made propane tanks, I thought they only built campers and trailers.
  • I recently took my two 30# tanks to AmerGas in Knoxville for recertification after 12 years.... they cahrged me $10.... one of the tanks was full.... no ptoblem... the 12 year recertification is a visual inspection.... test the valve for leaks, etc.

Rust alone makes the tanks unsafe... leaky valves.... explosions.... everyone doesn't maintain their takes as well as I'm sure that you do.

I had the second tank filled... it was about $23

Ferrell Gas wanted about 3 times as much.... have a reputation to fail your tank so that you'll buy another.

Ferrell Gas in Sante Fe NM tried to tell me that they put 7.1 gallons of propane in my 30# tank.... it has space for 7.5 gallons but the "new" orp valve limits the 30 pound tanks to 80%... 6 gallons...that is part of the safety factor.... I will never go to a Ferrell dealer again....

No big deal... you might have to leave them over night so so that a certified technicion can do the inspection.

U-Haul dealers all over the country have propane sales.... and they are honest... I never found one than did the inspections though. They cahrge you for only what they put into your tank.

NOTE: It is my understanding that my next inspection will be due in 6 years.... more stringent.... might be time to buy new tanks... 30 pounders are about $60 each

If you have 20# tanks why don't you just trase them out at Home Depot or Walmart.... get full tanks... leave them yours... the vender would have them certified before returning them to the Trade-out market
  • I had my 97 Lance horizontal tanks re-cet last year ,old cert stamp was 6 years old
Visual inspection and soapy water check for leaks at valve when open and shut , still hooked up to pump
I did take the valves apart and replace the O-rings that were bad , and letting out gas when screwed from open to closed and vise versa.
O-rings where easy to find at hardware store
The non-opd valves seat brass to brass when open and shut but rely on a o-ring to seal the shaft in between

need to have the other one done now ....
i just dropped it off in the am picked it up in the pm...

    If 'permanently' mounted....YES
    IF removable.........NO

  • Just a minute! Are the tanks truly horizontal? Are they permanently mounted? If horizontal and not mounted re-certification or replacement are your options. No exchange for horizontal tanks. As noted recert cost is all over the park.
  • Re-certification is required on portable propane cylinders (DOT requirement) 12 yrs. after mfg. date (Stamped on safety collar)

Visual Inspection......good for 5 yrs. ANY bulk propane dealer can do inspection and issue new certification decal. (Can be redone ever 5 yrs.) Cost can be $5 to $35 depending on who/where done. No standard fee.

2 other methods used re-certs good for 7 or 12 yrs. Both require actual testing of cylinders
5 yr Visual is most common method

Alternative.... (IF cylinder is standard 20# Vertical Style ----not horizontal ones)
    Propane exchange (Blue Rhino etc.)
They re-cert cylinders that are swapped (part of business expenses)
