"You will get much better mpg by slowing down 5mph than changing tires. The slow down doesn't cost money and comes with the added benefit of being safer."
Exactly. Drop your crusing speed by 5 mph. Be safer, enjoy the trip and use much less fuel. It is vacation after all, not the Indy 500.
My ancient 97 7.3 gets it's best mileage at 2100 rpm which equates to 62-63 mph on the e-way with 4:10's on 33.5 tires. I can get 18+ on the flat on cruise.
Besides, any speed over 45 mph is perfectly legal on any Interstate Highway anywhere. Under 45, flashers are required....lol
I just stay in the slow lane and enjoy the scenery and interestingly, the people that pass me, I usually pass at the gas station while they are replenishing their fuel tank.
Find the 'sweet spot' where your motor is happiest and run that speed. You'll get better mileage, wear and tear will be less, you'll be safer and happier.
Tire diameter has little to do with mileage. Wind resistance and GWW is what impacts mileage. Higher speeds = more wind resistance = lower mpg.
