You are describing clerks and order takers, not real salesmen. A genuine, able salesman can earn an excellent living. My dad was a salesman for 30 years, and was earning six figures back in the '70s. But still, the order takers perform important and valued work too. Without people willing to take your order at the restaurant or check you in at the campground, where would you be? The OP doesn't want to see all the little stores disappear, and that is okay. We all have our quirks, habits, pet projects and motivations.
Umm, the OP IS talking about "clerks AND order takers" IN A RETAIL ENVIRONMENT when looking for "general merchandise" like a simple LED light bulb, not big figure "sales people" like say a sales person selling say a Lexus, Porsche ect.
Yeah, I am and the OP IS talking about the folks working the sales floors in Walmart, they ARE NOT MAKING HUGE AMOUNTS OF MONEY, those jobs NEVER were designed to be more than ENTRY LEVEL to get a person STARTED IN LIFE.
Even my DD started in a retail grocery chain at $7.50 per hr WHILE IN HIGH SCHOOL. She is in college working on a 2 yr degree and now planning to go for a 4 yr degree. And YES she is now working for a summer camp at $9 per hr for this summer.
Even a 19yr old GETS IT, but obviously most folks like you do not.
I FULLY understand where the OP is coming from, I HAVE tried and tried to dump my money in LOCAL "Mom and Pop" retail shops, I HAVE tried to even spend my filthy money in even the "box stores" like Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes ect..
But NONE of them are interested in my filthy money because they no longer are WILLING to go the extra mile for the CUSTOMER and STOCK items that may be slow moving or special interest.
THEY LOSE and the ONLINE way WINS.
Sticks and bricks stores WILL continue to shrink AND GO OUT OF BUSINESS unless they make a real change in how they approach stocking for consumer demands and needs. It is just the way things are now.
