Lets Clarify: F250 Fifth Wheel Set-up

And someone posted last week they has about 2070 pounds on a F250. IF you don't have the truck yet, get the single rear wheel 350 for about 1300 pounds more payload all else equal and $200-600.

APT is correct, huge payload difference in 250s. Gas will have more, diesels much less.

My 13 F250 SC XLT 4x4 6.2 has a door sticker payload of 3,232.

Best to get a higher GVWR F350, if you need the diesel, and want to carry a heavier FW.

I think donn0128 has way too much of a fudge factor built in (only real way to know is to weigh everything). I also don't know where you got the trailer weights (brochure or from the actual label on the trailer in question). I have a 2008 Dodge 2500 quad cab with CTD, so not the same vehicle by any stretch.

My empty truck is 6,477#. My empty fiver is 10,606# based on label on trailer. Total is 17,083#. With the wife and I both in truck (about 400#) and the trailer loaded we pulled into the CAT scales. I was apprehensive and a little worried. The CAT scale weights were 4,300# on front axle (FAWR is 4,750), 5,520 on rear axle (RAWR is 6,010), and 9,120 on trailer axles for a total of 18,940#. If we subtract total empty weight of 17,083# from loaded weight it means that all passengers and cargo in truck and trailer combined was 1,857#. We are OK even if we do load another few hundred lbs of stuff.

Now you may load very heavy, I just don't know. My fiver is a 2014 Columbus (Palomino by FR). Since I know the empty weights of my truck axles, I know the pin weight and cargo weights added 673# to my trucks front axle and 2,668# to my trucks rear axle. The brochure pin weight on my fiver is 1,940#. The loaded trailer was 11,788#.

My point is donn0128 may be right if you pack really heavy, but may be way too heavy if you pack relatively light like us. I'm guessing the 1857# of cargo was 400# people, 125# misc stuff in truck, 200# Superglide 5th wheel hitch, which leaves about 1,132# of stuff in our trailer. I admit to packing relatively light, even though my cargo weight does include about 100# for an inflatable boat.

Donn0128 says 3,500 lbs for stuff over dry weight, my actual is far less. I thought giving you my actual weights on a heavier trailer may help. Now the actual label on that trailer may be heavier if you are using brochure weights, so take it for what its worth. Hope this helps.

I don't own the truck, so I have been going off of Fords website spec sheet (linked above) for the payload capacity.
I too think that I will be packing lighter than a full timer. The proposed rig would be used for family weekend outings within 200 miles the vast majority of time.
If I understood you correctly, you are pulling heavier than my proposed set up with a similar 3/4 Dodge truck..?

You will be over your GVW rating (which will be less than actual FAWR+RAWR), close to your maximum stock tire weight ratings (listed as RAWR) and just fine with your actual axle weight ratings.

The combo is a excellent match up for any new gen 3/4 ton truck with a diesel option.

Ford rates the '14 F250 RAWR at 6100 lbs. Most loaded 4x4 F250 trucks rear axle weigh in the 2900-3000 lb range which leaves 3100-3200 lb for a payload.

I'm not a fan of using the trailers GVWR to determine how much pin weight it may have especially with todays newer trailers with large 3000-5000 lb CCC numbers. Best bet is to use the mfg dry shipping weight and then figure a percentage of how much weight you will add to the trailer forward of the axles and subtract a percentage of weight added aft of the axles.
Now our older trailers didn't have those large CCC numbers so GVWR was a better choice. My '97 5er for example has a 850 lb CCC so using GVWR made sense.

What is your take?

The payload listed is best case. Every accessory that is added decreases that number. An example would be carpet, cruise control, CD player, power seats, 37 gal instead of 26 gallon fuel tank ect.

My 2012 F-250 XL with 6.7 diesel, long bed crew cab has a stickered payload of 2629 lbs.

13896 x 0.21 = 2927# guess an estimate pin weight.

Good question.
The proponents of the "dry" plus a guess of stuff crowd feel they will never hit the trailers GVWR. While the GVWR crowd, me included, feel it is much easier to base your calculations on worst case scenario. Knowing that while we may not hit the GVWR, as long as we are under it is a bonus. Besides it is far easier for me to subtract one number from another than to try and sit down and make a list of every single item I may or may not have in my five on any one trip and then try to guess how much each item weighs and then add all those numbers up. See what I am driving at?
My example fifth wheel had a "dry" weight around 9900 pounds and a mystical 1650 pin weight. When we got it home and loaded with what we felt we needed/wanted we ended up with a scaled fiver that weighed 12,500 pounds on a 12,750 GVWR trailer. And we are not really loaded for bear. every spring I go through the entire trailer with a fine tooth comb and eliminate as much as possible. After this process and we have loaded food for a month we are still in the 12,500 pound range. And my pin weight is 3300-3500 pounds. I bought this fiver blissfully ignorant and spent three years trying to make do with a 2500 series truck. Adding air bags, bigger tires did nothing except help empty my wallet. I was finally able to afford to buy a dually and have never been happier in my life with a towing situation.
I guess the bottom line is this. Why not buy the correct tool for the job in the first place?
