Warranties are tricky tricky things...
My old SUV had a 10 year 100K mile power train warranty. I had owned it for about 8 years and eventually I got a company vehicle and just drove the SUV on weekends and vacations. About a week before a long vacation down to NC where I needed the SUV to haul my motorcycle trailer, I noticed a fluid leak under the SUV... transmission seal had gone bad. Had it towed (under warranty) to the dealer. They diagnosed the problem and fixed it under warranty. The repair bill was over $3000, plus the 30 mile tow bill. Didn't cost me a penny.
Bought my wife a Camry in 2008. They gave us the sales pitch on the warranty, we laughed at them... too expensive. About 2 years in, her radio stopped working. $900 radio!!! I thought about all the expensive electronic components on that car and researched warranty pricing. I found a dealership out west that sold the factory warranties for about $30 over cost. They would rather sell 10 warranties a day for $300 profit than 1 warranty a week for $2000 profit. I took that price in to my dealer, they matched it. It was less than half the cost they originally wanted. Did the same thing for my truck. For less than $2000 I have 8 years piece of mind warranty on my truck and wife's car. No surprises. That was worth it to me.
