As this is a lubrication subject there's probably a lot of controversy, please refrain from turning this into a discussion of the merits. My purpose was to just let others know this is how you can tell.
Since this is a technical related subject, why not "discuss the merits" of it ?
Huntingdog makes good points and his observations are similar to what others of us have experienced from hard won real world experience with these types of things.
I've had "bearing buddies" in the past on a boat trailer, and currently I have four trailers, two of which came with this other design of so called "feature". One has Lippert axles and the other has Dexter ( EZ-Lube ).
And yep, I've seen more than one drum come off of trailers where the guys used this gimmick, and they indeed had well lubed brakes.
So the real question for the trailer owners is not so much how to identify what kind of easy-to-lube feature you have, it is instead are you going to use this feature, and hope for the best ( or use, as H-Dog points out, your superman xray vision )....or are 'ya pull 'em apart and do 'em right ?
As Clint said said.....do 'ya feel lucky, punk ? Well....do 'ya.... ?
ps, the good news is when you blow grease past the seals and destroy your brakes, it's an easy enough fix to just buy an entire new backing plate/brake assembly from etrailer, and start from new.
