Liquid fabric softener and black/gray tank smell

20 mule team borax is what I use for a water softener.
I use a small coffee scoop (3 Tablespoons appx) in every load I wash in my Splendide washing machine. Close the gray valve while you wash a load and then open and drain the gray tank (keeps the machine smelling nice, too) I think one load uses 11 gal of water. So the gray tank is empty when I start doing laundry...and emptied after I pull the valve before the gray tank gets over full.
And I use it for taking the toilet bowl stains out. A few hours before I'm going to empty the black tank, I put 1/2 cup of 2X HE laundry detergent (I use WHISK) and 1/2 cup of 20 mule team Borax into the toilet bowl. Then I use the toilet bowl brush to mix it up while I fill the toilet bowl with water.
Let that set for a couple of hours then drain and rinse the black tank.
However you do it... If you have an in tank sprayer, it's much easier.
If you have to put a hose down into the black tank thru the toilet to spray water into the tank, then you will need to put another dose of laundry detergent and 20 mule team into the Black tank after the valve is closed.
In other words...when you get done... put some water into the black tank and flush the toilet so that you have laundry detergent and 20 mule team Borax in the tank.
I've been doing this for a long time... you might have to use more 20 mule team Borax in the beginning.
