Central valley and hauling a horse trailer roughly implies that his friend is probably going to be out in the country on some land and not a residential neighborhood. If that is truly the case, you could set up the camper pretty well if your friend is accommodating enough. I would suggest to put a few coppers in the kettle to maintain lasting good will...
If your friend is out in the country, and doesn't object, I would look at taking the camper off of the truck until such a time that you wanted to travel. Practice loading and unloading a few times and you could probably get it down to a quick enough time. The benefit of course is that you don't have to hassle with driving a large camper around all the time and you aren't causing unnecessary wear and tear on your vehicle because of it. Though you get use to driving with the added weight, it's the little things like forgetting to make sure all of your cabinets are properly latched and finding all of your pantry strewn over the camper floor that can be annoying.
Secondly, and perhaps more importantly as a college student, you may want to consider what the ladies might think of you if you pull up in your truck with camper to pick them up for a date. I'd bet they might be thinking (this guy brings his bed around on dates?.... creepy...). On the other hand, picking up a central valley girl in an F250 that is reasonably clean and without a camper might do quite well. Dating that is...
