Sorry for your loss Dave. As you can see from the responses you are never really alone - we are all around you.
Getting out into the beauty of the country is the right cure. Because I travel a lot Sally is often on her own, with the 2 remaining cats. But she has also found that when she is low she can get out into the country and clear her head of the negative thoughts.
On the plus side many people have been forced to move to ugly and depressing cities for work - I guess you got off lightly in Durango.
