We have been back and forth across the US and Canada many times and our opinions on this question have changed with time.
Life is a journey, not the destination. Travel should be too.
We like no more than 6 hours travel. Those areas we have pushed to get through have in time revealed many hidden and lesser known gems.
Now, that said, if you have limited time that could change. After all if you are traveling for 8 hours a day you are likely going to be too wiped out to do much recreating before you are back in the vehicle again.
The important thing is that you are hitting the road. Have a great adventure.
