It will mostly depend on the kids. I have a 5 Y.O. who is a road warrior and we have a portable DVD player for them to watch movies. Longest we have gone in one drive with the camper is about 730 miles in a day. When we did that trip, the camper was hooked to the truck and ready to go, we rolled out of bed at 4:30, grabbed our drinks, some food and were on the road in 15 minutes.
Since we have a pop-up as well, we usually plan a night in a motel if it's a two day drive. We get in early enough for everybody to relax and swim a little to burn off some energy. Plus we try to get a place that has free breakfast to help offset some of the cost of the room.
The last thing I want to do after a long day is to spend another 45 min-1 hr setting up camp just for one night. With a drive of that length, I think it would be in everybody's best interest to stop for the night. Even if you can go 10 hrs a day, a short second day drive will still allow you to get camp set up and start the sight seeing.
