We bought both our HTT and new TT about 12 hour drive from home. We saved enough money on both - over $4000 on the HTT and more on the TT - to warrant the trip expenses. A HTT friend lives in NO CA and drove to Chi to get his over the local CA dealers and also saved over $4000 after expenses. We also considered the trip a fun part of the new trailer experience...a little quality time with spouse. We stayed at a wonderful SP about 10 min from the dealer and had time to go over it. We found a couple of minor things, called them and dropped back by in the morning on our way out. A wire to the outside speakers was loose and a piece of lower trim had a small crack....they took a pix to send to FR and get the replacement and were on our way.
Re service...we've never had a problem since we've not needed any warranty service. A friend in Nashville bought her HTT in GA and the factory set her up for some warranty work in Chattanooga...not a terrible drive and she was well pleased. If the problem is in appliances or systems, it's that manufacturer that handles the authorization at whatever dealer, not necessarily the dealer you bought from. I would not lose sleep over service. Between the manufacturer and the dealer, you will get what you need.
IMHO, if you have the time and want to turn it into a mini-vacation, go for it. If you don't want to fool with it or the cost savings is insignificant, then just buy locally and enjoy getting started with your new trailer.
