I believe that the industry went to EPDM because aluminum got too expensive and it is quick, cheap and easy to glue down a rubber membrane over the plywood. no real skill required. and there are plenty of TPO/aluminum/fiberglass roofed units available that have been made in the last 20 - 25 years.
