Looking at travel trailer and what suv/truck is Right

Hello All,

Glad to be part of this group. I like the hummingbird by jayco model 17rk. I have a jeep 2015 compass. Now I know dealerships don't always tell the truth and I haven't purchased the travel trailer yet. Can that keep pull it. I wasn't sure of the math and any help I thank you.

  • The Compass can not tow any travel trailer at all. It can only tow the very lightest of pop ups.

  • While I am sure this is true today, my first tow vehicle was a 1996 Toyota Previa. That was their minivan before they came out with the Sienna. It was a 4-cylinder vehicle with a 3500 lb towing rating. I'm sure most people here would tell me "you can't do that," but that's what I did. I towed my 2000lb popup all through the rockies and across the plains and up and down the East coast. No problems. Oh, by the way, it was turbocharged. Best vehicle I've ever owned.

There is a big difference between pulling a 2k pop up vs a full size high wall that is 2800lbs dry. The op is looking at a tt that loaded will be pushing 4K, plus the added wind resistance. Too much for any 4cyl vehicle, turbo charged or not.
  • Also keep in mind there is more to it that engine power. the unibody has to support the weight and the brakes have to stop it and the driveline has to control it. the engine is not the limiting factor

From what I see online, the Compass only has a 2,000lbs tow rating which isn't even enough for a small pop up. The 17rk has a dry weight of 2800lbs which far exceeds your vehicles capability even when it is empty. If you want a full high wall tt, you really need a bigger tow vehicle with at least a V6. There is no 4 cylinder vehicle capable of towing that trailer or anything like it.

  • the compass is not a true suv. it cant pull anything more than a small utility trailer I wouldn't even pull a popup with it especially if it has a cvt transmission. trust me I'm a Jeep guy and I'll be the first to admit the compass/patriot aren't jeeps.

  • On the driver's side door jamb of your Jeep is a tire and loading sticker. It will list the amount of weight that can be handled by your vehicle. Please, get the weight numbers off that sticker and post back here.

Those weight numbers will be your entire payload of the vehicle. You can then add in the cargo carried, the weight of passengers, etc. Subtract that subtotal from the sticker weight and you will know how much tongue weight can be handled. Typical tongue weight of TT's is from 12->15 percent of trailer gross weight.
