We towed a small trailer (about 3,100 lbs fully loaded) with a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee HO V8 and the problem wasn't that the trailer was too heavy, it was that the Jeep had a terrible transmission for towing, with really only 3 gears, and spent its entire towing life hunting for whatever gear it wasn't in.
We also decided, after seeing two spectacular wrecks, that we wanted a dual axle trailer. And that we wanted a walk-around bed, because we were tired of having to remake the bed every night and tired of having to crawl out of bed over the other person.
It did mean ditching the Jeep and upgrading the tow vehicle, which is why we put it off for more than a year.
Nothing wrong with buying a new trailer, as the odd trailer market (around here) means that used holds its value, at least at the low end. I bought my other trailer in 2010, paid $10,000 for it brand new and traded it in this year and got $6,500 for it and the dealer sold it for $8,500.
