Looking for a Quality 26-28 Footer

We bought our first RV last year. A 21 foot Trail lite. Did about 11 trips. Loved camping and the concept. Did not completely like the RV itself due to not enough space, mostly that the master bed space was to fold out the large dinette. I want a good nights sleep when I'm out and about. Also, the AC was EXTREMELY loud and freezing cold on the lowest setting. I don't mind the cold but my wife forbid it from being on at night both because of the noise and lack of ability to adjust.

As we have been looking at getting another camper, we want to buy based on our experience and I would prefer to buy something a bit bigger. It will be used and the layout will be targeted at a queen bed with a bunk set and possibly a slide out.

We have been searching and gone to see some 6-9 year old campers private sale and roof leaks seem to be a feature now a days on most of these. The one's with slide outs especially.

Question: What brands hold up the best for TT in this size range? I noticed that some of the rockwoods have an awning extract with/over the slide out. I know that the answer to this will vary with opinion and popper care will prevent most of these kinds of failures. However, there must be some brands that are most consistent than others?

  • I really wish one of the Northwood brands, especially AF, had a 26/28 BHS floorplan as that would get me to buy a new one. Would like to get the quality and true 4 season ability out of the AF but I will not sacrifice going with a floorplan I don't want.

For me, Airstream doesn't do slides so that is a deal breaker. Airstreams feel way too cramped and sterile inside for my family's taste.
  • Around that size range, I'd look at Northwood/Nash/Arctic Fox models, as well as Airstreams.
  • Wow, the BHS looks like what we are after.

We have a 10 year old son and dog. The dedicated bed is our biggest target. The other had bunks with an almost twin size and almost full size. That sent my wife and I up front of the camper on the dinette pieced together from 8 cushions which was as comfortable as it sounds.

I want something that has more room and will last. I forgot to mention that our Trail lite was showing signs of rust on the bottom. Did not look like surface rust either. Looked more like corrosion from something not grounded properly or galvanic corrosion from some of the connected aluminum framing.
  • The 26 - 28 footer...is that the overall length or the coach length?

We are very pleased with our 26bhs floorplan. Has dedicated master bed and two dedicated bunks for the kids. A large slide that contains the dinette and couch but does add a decent amount of weight.

The 26bhs is a very, or used to be, common floorplan but does come to 30 feet total, point to bumper.

I did originally have an adjustment issue with our slide but that was resolved. 2007 Komfort Kampsite 26bhs (7200 dry with 9500 GVWR). We have thought about upgrading for a new TT but I don't want to drag along a larger TT even though I have the truck to pull it. Also, I don't want to give up this floorplan design. Seems a very good fit for us...family of 4 (2 pre-teens).
  • We have a Coachmen Freedom Express 233RBS that we like a lot. They have models like you are looking for. One advantage, the A/C is ducted throughout the trailer so it is much quieter.
