If you're not carrying any real payload, you'd be hard pressed to bottom out your 1 ton and damage the airbags. It's possible but you'd have to jump it like the Dukes of Hazard!
I don't really worry if there's air in them when I'm not using them. Just have to make sure you don't load the truck down without at least minimum air in it.
