IMO that's an anomoly. Typically the other way around, especially with diesels.
Again, when looking at older vehicles like the OP is, simplicity (manual trans) typically wins out.
I'm just reporting my own observations. I was shopping in the same model year range as the OP, and I looked through a LOT of ads.
