We traveled north Alabama to Moab in May. Just go to Memphis and turn left on I-40 and go 1000 miles.
We turned north at Clines corners on 285 before ABQ and went thru Santa Fe and Espanola, then 84 thru Chama and Pagosa Springs then Durango and over to 191 into Moab, although we were not in a hurry and our son is in Santa Fe. The most direct route is probably 371 north from I-40 to Farmington but I have not been that way.
Do some planning on fuel availability and range. We pulled with a gas truck and, while Utah is absolutely gorgeous, there's a lot of nothing between the towns. We towed down scenic highway 95 and it was literally 144 miles between service stations (we knew in advance). Also be aware there are a lot of stations that used to be there and shown on the map but are abandoned now. I just planned on fuel stops that had at least 2 stations showing on the map.
